“I’ll put it simply. You’re not... human.”
Syrna blinked at him, taken entirely by surprise, “I’m not?”
“You came in here to get a kitchen knife removed from your trachea. Yesterday. You’re sitting here talking to me today. Your medical history indicates that this is not uncommon for you.”
Syrna cocked her head, “And?”
“Well...” Partem flipped through the chart, “You complain of insomnia at night and narcolepsy in the daytime. Your eyes are mildly phosphorous. You have hollow, long, unusually sharp incisors, which according to your dental record grow back every time they file them down. You can’t eat food. The only thing you appear to consume is blood, and if what you’ve told your doctors for the past two years is true, you’ve been subsisting on the substance. You should have died of malnutrition 18 months ago.”
Syrna nodded slowly, holding up a hand to show that she was considering this, “Okay. I get that.” She pursed her lips and paused, “So, what part of that means I’m not human?”
Partem sighed and did some more flipping, “The... part where you... Ah, here it is.” He stopped on a page and turned the clipboard around so she could see it, “The part where you don’t have the majority of necessary human organs. And have some organs we don’t quite recognize.”
She took the chart from him and examined it, “That’s a spleen, isn’t it?”
“No. It’s not.”
“Oh.”
She sighed and stood, shaking her hands in front of her, “Well, look, okay... I might not be quite human... but, you know, I’m really not sure the president of Microsoft is, either, so it’s not that uncommon, right?”
