Fanfiction update and writer rantage
Nov. 13th, 2004 11:52 pmHey. I updated Pirates of the Caribbean 5, which can be found here: http://www.fanfiction.net/~Seraphina2
This story is going to be coming to a close. Soon for me, probably not soon for my dear readers. I've got several chapters written ahead of time, but instead of using them in a nice, regular-update fashion, I'm just going to post them daily once I get to them and then go back to once-a-week once I run out, until the story ends. I'm already preparing my little "Hey, guess what, the story ended" speech. There's something about this story that's been really meaningful to me -- it helps that it's the longest I've ever written and is the only one where I can truly say that I've bothered to develop most of the characters (and put it on paper, instead of keeping it all in my head). I was considering where to go after this and I decided... I'm going back. I'm going to start the whole accursed (none but I grasps the pun there, no doubt) thing over again. Yup, that's right, I'm rewriting it. You see, I'm satisfied with the characterization. I'm satisfied with the story. I'm satisfied with the excessively-complex-and-impossible-to-keep-track-of details and character relationships. I'm not satisfied with how it's presented. If you've read the series (starting, of course, with Pirates of the Caribbean 2: The Curse Returns) all the way up to where it is now, you can't help but notice 1. The slow development of my writing ability throughout, 2. The slow increase in vocabulary level, and 3. The sudden and dramatic change in style and skill from PotC2-4 to PotC5. Being anal-retentive when it comes to stories, as all writers are, this means that I'm not going to be happy with the finished product until it's a good and consistent finished product. So the complete set that will be fully posted whenever I manage to end the last part of the series will be Version 1.0. Now, as any computer geek reading this knows (as for me, I am not a geek, I am a dork who multitasks), Version 1.0 is always the worst and least functional version. Always.
Right now, I'm not certain how I want to present Version 2.0. Considering it doesn't exist, that shouldn't be a problem, but... eh, what the heck. I know there's no way in the seven circles of the inferno that I can ever get it done with the plan "Redo it all then post it/have it orderable by email" (I know all 1-3 people who'd order it, too). The only way I've gotten this far, so close to the completion of 1.0, is because I've had my great reviewers and amazing previewers (kudos to Lok, especially) supporting/threatening me for over a year. The only way I'll EVER get 2.0 off the ground is with at the very least support from my homedogs... err, I mean, my previewers. So, I could... a: replace 1.0 chapter by chapter with 2.0 on Seraphina2, b: post chapters of 2.0 on another site (like this one) until it's finished and then break fanfiction.net law to post it all as one darn big fanfiction, c: post chapters of 2.0 on my blogs and not post it on ff.net at all, d: just email the durned thing to my friends and whoever else wants it one chapter at a time, or... and the options go on. Oh, and, no, there is no way I am ever going to, at one time, post all of 1.0 here. That's 140-some freaking pages. 2.0 will be even longer.
Oh, and, btw, to shove those reading this out of the direction of oncoming confusion, 2.0 doesn't mean "sequel" in this rant, it means "second version". Anyway... when I get around to it, I'll be posting another scary story in Spanish soon (I've written it, I've had it edited by two hispanic friends, I'm just too lazy to post it), which is MUCH scarier than the last one. Mwahaha.
Ta, mates.
